What is Wild Cinnamon?

While cinnamon is native to India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, & China, and has been cultivated for long for its myriad uses, in the forests of Meghalaya it is found growing wild.  It is believed that the bark of this variety growing in the wild yields superior quality spices.

The beneficial properties of Wild Cinnamon

Wild Cinnamon gets its distinctive smell and taste from the organic compound present in its bark called cinnamaldehyde.  This compound has anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal properties.  Cinnamon is rich in antioxidants (compounds that inhibit oxidation in the body – a process that can produce free radicals which damage cells- thus, antioxidants are also called free-radical scavengers).  Its anti-inflammatory properties can help lower the risk of diseases and its probiotic properties may help improve gut health.

Cinnamon extract has been used for long to treat digestion related disorders.  Various studies have explored the possibility that it can help with managing blood sugar and improving cholesterol as well.

Some interesting facts about the indigenous ingredients

Lakadong Turmeric has nearly 3x the curcumin content (the compound that gives turmeric its potency) than any other variety of turmeric and is only found growing in Lakadong, Meghalaya.  The medicinal properties of turmeric are second to none and have been long known and employed in Ayurvedic, Unani, and other traditional healing practices over the ages. It has been used as an antacid, in a powder form to promote wound healing, as an analgesic to relieve headaches, as a stimulant to promote blood flow, and so on. It is known for its anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant , anti-carcinogenic properties and it helps boost immunity.

Karbi Ginger, a GI tagged ginger because of its superior qualities and medicinal properties, is only found in Karbi Anglong district of Assam.  It is a superfood with its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties.  Recent studies indicate that it may even be an anti-carcinogenic.  Gingerols and shogaols, present in fresh and dried ginger respectively, are known to alleviate nausea and vomiting and ginger is definitely good for gut health.

Ashwagandha, commonly known as Indian Winter Cherry or Indian Ginseng, is harvested from naturally grown plants on the wild hillocks of upper Assam.  It is one of the most important herbs in Ayurveda used for its wide ranging health benefits.  It is considered a potent regenerative tonic due to its anti-stress, anti-tumour, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective and analgesic properties.

Black Cardamom is sourced from the remote forests in the foothills of Himalayas in Arunachal Pradesh where it grows in a pristine and unpolluted environment.  Owing to its medicinal properties, it has been used in Ayurvedic and Unani systems of traditional medicine.  It is an analgesic, anti-viral, anti-bacterial, beneficial for gastro-intestinal & respiratory issues,  and useful for flushing out toxins from the body.
